With only 14 days until Spring Training, it’s a good time to look at some of the bigger moves the Cubs have made in their hope to not only win a division but to have a successful postseason. Today the Cubs sent Ronny Cedeno and recently acquired Garrett Olson. Olson was acquired along with a minor league pitcher in exchange for Felix Pie earlier this month.
As it stands, the Cubs basically traded Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie for Aaron Heilman, and despite my fondness of Felix Pie I’ve got to admit that the Cubs seem to have gotten the better of this deal. Analysis after the jump

In a move that was foreshadowed by the signing of Joey Gathright and later the minor league deal with 39 year old So Taguchi, the Cubs traded away their most hyped bluechip prospect since Corey Patterson. Only difference was this time the blue-chip Pie wasn’t washed up and given every opportunity possible to succeed. The trade of Felix even though for a young former fallen top Baltimore prospect in Garrett Olsen plus Hank Williamson, shows what direction this club is headed; screw the youth and win it all now at any cost. In one of Hendry’s rare dealings he trades a player at their peak value. Unfortunately, he got very little in return for the extremely versatile Mark DeRosa. At age 33, DeRosa posted his best season of his career with a line of .285/.376/.481/.857 in 505 at bats. The chances of him duplicating or bettering those numbers is slim to nil, instead he was in line to return to a OPS of ~.800; now that seems almost a sure bet if not lower due to trade. Still DeRosa could play 2B/3B/RF with an average affinity add that with his hitting prowess and at 5.5M, he is a good bargain for 2009. So what did the Cubs wrangle in for superutility player?
