Jayson Werth continued to torment the Cubs, as his solo homer & 2-run double led the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon from Wrigley Field.
The Phillies struck for 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning after Chase Utley drew a 1-out walk from Cubs starter Sean Marshall.
Utley then stole 2nd base during Pat Burrell’s at-bat, who struck out swinging.
Ryan Howard then hit an RBI single to score Utley from 2nd base & give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
Shane Victorino then singled to put runners at 1st & 2nd with 2 outs for Jayson Werth.
Werth continued his torrid hitting this weekend, as he hit a 2-run double to score both Howard & Victorino, giving the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
With Werth on 2nd base & 2 outs, Pedro Feliz then hit an infield flyout to Derrek Lee in foul territory to end the inning.
Philadelphia then tried to add onto their lead in the top of the 2nd inning after Jimmy Rollins hit a 2-out bloop outfield single against Marshall.
Chase Utley then reached on an infield single which put runners at 1st & 3rd for Pat Burrell, who struck out looking to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs then got a rally going in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Mark DeRosa & Geovany Soto hit back-to-back singles against Phillies starter Jamie Moyer.
2 batters later, Ronny Cedeno reached 1st base safely after Shane Victorino dropped a flyball in centerfield, which allowed DeRosa to score from 2nd base & make it a 3-1 game.
Sean Marshall then hit an RBI single to score Soto from 2nd base, which made it a 3-2 game.
2 batters later with runners at the corners, Reed Johnson flied out to Jayson Werth in right field to end the inning.
The Phillies then struck right back in the top of the 3rd inning after Ryan Howard hit a lead-off single against Marshall.
Shane Victorino then reached 1st base safely on a bunt single, which put runners at 1st & 3rd with nobody out for Jayson Werth.
Werth then hit a comebacker to Marshall for the 1st out, but was able to advance Victorino to 2nd base.
Pedro Feliz was then intentionally walked, which loaded the bases with just 1 out for Carlos Ruiz.
Ruiz then flied out to Kosuke Fukudome in right field for the 2nd out before Jamie Moyer’s comebacker to Sean Marshall ended the scoring threat.
Chicago then had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning after Derrek Lee drew a lead-off walk from Moyer.
3 batters later, Geovany Soto hit a 2-out single to put runners at 1st & 3rd for Kosuke Fukudome, who struck out to end the scoring threat.
Jayson Werth then hit a 2-out solo homer in the 5th inning (21st of season) to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead.
Philadelphia then put together another scoring rally in the top of the 6th inning after Carlos Ruiz hit a lead-off double against Marshall.
Moyer then laid down a successful sac bunt, which advanced Ruiz to 3rd base with just 1 out for Jimmy Rollins.
Rollins then hit a sac fly to Alfonso Soriano in left field, which scored Ruiz from 3rd base & gave the Phillies a 5-2 lead.
The Cubs then tried to rally in the bottom of the 6th inning after Kosuke Fukudome hit a 1-out single off Moyer, which was followed by a walk from Ronny Cedeno that put runners at 1st & 2nd with just 1 out for pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot.
Theriot struck out looking against Phillies reliever Chad Durbin before Alfonso Soriano hit an infield popup to end the scoring threat.
Chicago had another good scoring chance in the bottom of the 8th inning after Geovany Soto hit a 1-out single against Durbin.
Soto then advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch from Phillies reliever J.C. Romero during Kosuke Fukudome’s at-bat, who grounded out to Chase Utley at 2nd base but advanced Soto to 3rd base on the play.
Pinch-hitter Henry Blanco then hit an RBI single to score Soto from 3rd & made it a 5-3 game.
Pinch-hitter Daryle Ward then singled to put runners at 1st & 2nd with 2 outs for Alfonso Soriano.
Soriano struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Phillies rallied in the top of the 9th after Chase Utley & Pat Burrell hit back-to-back 1-out singles against Cubs reliever Neal Cotts.
Ryan Howard struck out before Shane Victorino hit an outfield flyout to end the scoring threat.
Brad Lidge then retired the side to close the game & earn Philadelphia a split in this 4-game weekend set.
Jamie Moyer (12-7) gets the win for the Phillies after pitching 5 1/3 innings & allowing 2 runs on 8 hits.
Sean Marshall (3-4) takes the loss for the Cubs after allowing 5 runs on 9 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Brad Lidge pitched a perfect 9th for his 33rd save of the season.
Chicago will host Houston in a 3-game series at Wrigley Field beginning on Labor Day at 3:05 PM cst, as Cubs righthander Jason Marquis (9-7, 4.52) will be opposed by Astros ace Roy Oswalt (12-9, 4.110.
Marquis is coming off perhaps his best start of the season on August 27th when he pitched 7 shutout innings during the Cubs’ 2-0 win.
Houston has won 6 of Oswalt’s last 7 starts dating back to July 28th against Cincinnati. Oswalt is 4-6 in 12 road starts with a 3.93 ERA & lost to the Cubs back on April 5th after allowing 6 runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings during the Astros’ 9-7 loss.
