It seems like no lead is safe these days for the Cubs.
Derrek Lee’s 2nd inning homer wasn’t enough to carry the offense, as San Diego scored 3 straight runs to win it 3-1 over Chicago on Saturday evening from PETCO Park.
The Cubs took an early lead in the 2nd thanks to Derrek Lee’s lead-off solo homer (5th of season) off Padres starter Josh Geer, which gave Chicago a 1-0 lead.
Geovany Soto & Mike Fontenot then later hit back-to-back singles, which brought up Bobby Scales with runners at 1st & 2nd with just 1 out.
Scales & Randy Wells both hit outfield flyouts to end the inning.
Wells then made a mental error in the 7th that cost him dearly, as he balked with 2 outs & Noah Hundley on 1st base.
This allowed Hundley to advance to 2nd base during Chris Burke’s at-bat, who hit an RBI single to give the Padres a 3-1 lead.
San Diego got their 1st rally in the game going in the 4th after Edgar Gonzalez was hit by a 1-out pitch from Chicago starter Randy Wells.
2 batters later, Scott Hairston singled to put runners at 1st & 3rd with 2 outs for Brian Giles.
Giles then hit an RBI double to score Gonzalez from 3rd, while Hairston was also able to score thanks to Micah Hoffpuair’s errant throw from left field. This gave the Padres a 2-1 lead.
It also ended Randy Wells’ 20 inning streak to start the season without allowing an earned run.
With 2 outs & Giles on 2nd, Kevin Kouzmanoff grounded out to Bobby Scales at 3rd base to end the inning.
Edward Mujica then pitched in the 9th & looked to nail down his 1st career save.
It didn’t start out smoothly, as Milton Bradley hit a lead-off single which put Derrek Lee as the game-tying run.
Lee then singled, which put runners at 1st & 3rd with nobody out for Micah Hoffpauir.
Hoffpauir then lined out to Adrian Gonzalez at 1st base, who threw to 2nd in time to nail Lee for the double play.
Mujica then struck out Geovany Soto looking to end the game & give Chicago their 6th straight loss.
Josh Geer (1-1) gets the win for San Diego after pitching 6 2/3 innings & allowed 1 run on 5 hits while striking out a career-high 7 batters.
Randy Wells (0-1) takes the loss for the Cubs after allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings despite striking out a career-high 7 batters.
Edward Mjuica gave up 2 hits in the 9th inning, but pitched out of a jam to earn his 1st career major-league save for the Padres.
The Cubs will try to salvage this series & get at least 1 win on this road trip Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM cst, as southpaw Ted Lilly (5-3, 3.35) will square off against Padres righty Chris Young (3-2, 5.07).
Lilly beat San Diego on May 13th after pitching 6 1/3 innings & allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 7 during the Cubs’ 6-4 win.
Young has been stellar at home this season, as he sports a 3-0 record in 4 starts with a 2.16 ERA.
The Cubs did beat Young on May 13th after the lefty gave up 6 runs on 6 hits & a season-high 4 homers during the Padres’ 6-4 loss.
Chicago left fielder Alfonso Soriano should return to the starting lineup today & is 4-for-13 (.308) lifetime against Young with a double, triple & two home runs.
Signing off for now,
