Carlos Gonzalez completed a huge game with the biggest hit of the evening, as his 9th inning walkoff homer lifted the Colorado Rockies to a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.
The Rockies tried to score a run in the 1st after Carlos Gonzalez hit a 2-out single off Cubs starter Tom Gorzelanny & stole 2nd base during Troy Tulowitzki’s at-bat.
Tulowitzki grounded out to Starlin Castro at shortstop to end the inning.
Colorado then struck for a big 2nd inning, which started after Melvin Mora reached safely on an infield single against Gorzelanny.
Ryan Spilborghs drew a walk, which put runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out for Brad Hawpe.
Hawpe struck out swinging, but Miguel Olivo delivered the big blow with a 3-run homer (13th of season) to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.
The Cubs then had their first scoring chance of the game in the 3rd, as Geovany Soto reached safely thanks to Melvin Mora’s error at 3rd base.
After Mike Fontenot struck out swinging, Tom Gorzelanny laid down a bunt to advance Soto into scoring position.
That left it up to Tyler Colvin, who flied out to Dexter Fowler in shallow center to end the inning.
The Rockies added another run in the 4th, as Carlos Gonzalez hit a 1-out triple off the wall in right center against Gorzelanny.
Troy Tulowitzki then popped up to Starlin Castro at shortstop, which brought up Melvin Mora.
Mora hit an RBI single to left, which scored Gonzalez from 3rd & made it a 4-0 game.
Chicago ended the shutout in the 4th, as Marlon Byrd hit a lead-off single against Colorado starter Jason Hammel.
Alfonso Soriano then delivered an RBI double down the left-field line, as Byrd scored from 1st base to make it a 4-1 game.
Soriano advanced to 3rd on the play, which set up an RBI chance for Geovany Soto.
Soto was then robbed of a hit thanks to a great play by Ryan Spilborghs, as he made a nice leaping catch in deep right.
However, Soriano scored from 3rd base to make it a 4-2 game.
Colorado tried to extend their lead in the 5th, as Carlos Gonzalez hit a 2-out double off Gorzelanny.
Troy Tulowitzki then grounded out to Starlin Castro at shortstop to end the inning.
The Rockies again had a scoring chance in the 6th, as Melvin Mora hit a lead-off single to right center against Gorzelanny.
2 batters later, Brad Hawpe grounded out to Derrek Lee at 1st to advance Mora into scoring position.
Miguel Olivo was then intentionally walked, which put runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs for Jason Hammel.
Hammel flied out to Tyler Colvin in right field to end the scoring chance.
Colorado added onto their lead in the 7th, as Dexter Fowler & Clint Barmes hit back-to-back singles off Gorzelanny.
Carlos Gonzalez was then robbed of a hit thanks to a nice diving catch by Marlon Byrd in centerfield, but Fowler scored from 3rd base to give the Rockies a 5-2 lead.
Carlos Zambrano then entered the game for his first pitching appearence in over a month & issued a walk to Troy Tulowitzki, whichput runners on 1st & 2nd with just 1 out for Melvin Mora.
Mora singled to right, which loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Seth Smith.
Smith struck out swinging, which left it up to Brad Hawpe.
Hawpe then flied out to Starlin Castro at shortstop to end the inning.
The Cubs then put together a big 8th inning, as Mike Fontenot & Kosuke Fukudome hit back-to-back 1 out singles off Hammel.
Rafael Betancourt then entered the game & struck out Starlin Castro, which left it up to Derrek Lee.
Lee tied it on one mighty swing, as his 3-run homer (12th of season) tied it up 5-5.
The Rockies tried to go ahead in the 8th, as Dexter Fowler hit a 2-out single off Cubs reliever Sean Marshall.
Fowler then stole 2nd base during Melvin Mora’s at-bat, as he lined out to Alfonso Soriano in left field to end the inning.
Colorado ended the game on one swing in the 9th, as Carlos Gonzalez belted a walkoff solo homer (21st of season) to give the Rockies a thrilling 6-5 win.
Huston Street (2-2) gets the win for Colorado after only needing five pitches to complete a scoreless 9th inning.
Sean Marshall (6-3) takes the loss for Chicago after serving up Carlos Gonzalez’s 9th inning walk-off homer.
The Cubs will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 PM cst from Coors Field, as Carlos Silva (10-4, 3.76) goes against Rockies lefthander Jorge De La Rosa (3-3, 5.15).
Silva will hope to bounce back from a disappointing July, as he finished 2-2 in 5 starts with a 6.86 ERA.
De La Rosa has been winless in 4 starts since the All-Star Break, as he sports a 5.51 ERA along with a 6.53 ERA for the month of July.
Prior to Saturday’s game, the Cubs traded pitcher Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will send infielder Blake DeWitt & two-minor leaguers to Chicago.
DeWitt is a career .262 hitter in 230 games played, while he’s split time at 2nd base, 3rd base & shortstop.
