Moises Alou says “I wouldnt have caught the ball…”

April 2nd, 2008

With all the chatter about curses, black cats, and blown bullpens, it seems only fitting that Moises Alou has something to add to the mix. In an article over at ESPN.com (here) Moises Alou discusses the catch that nearly was and says “I wouldn’t have caught it, anyway.”

In an odd twist of fate that has Moises looking like the April Fool, he decided to speak up in the article and completely contradict what he had to say right after the event occurred. Dont remember what he had to say after Game 6 of the NLCS? Let me refresh your memory…

“I timed it perfectly, I jumped perfectly. I’m almost 100 percent that I had a clean shot to catch the ball. All of a sudden, there’s a hand on my glove.”

So this brings the obvious question, why did Alou throw such a fit at the time of the incident? If he had no chance to catch the ball, why make such a distraction out of the foul ball that landed into the stands? Why point fingers and help pin the blame on the fan that interfered when he allegedly had no chance at even catching the ball?

These are questions that only Moises can answer, obviously, but I’ve got an even better one that I’d love to hear the answer to: Why bring all of this up now?

The context of how the article came to be isnt clear, although in the article Alou does say, “Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, ‘Bartman! Bartman!’ I feel really bad for the kid.”

Well, Moises, you should feel bad. If you wouldnt have acted like a five year-old in the supermarket who didnt get what he wanted I REALLY dont think that anyone would know the name of the fan that interfered with the play. If Alou doesnt slam his glove to the ground and point the guy out, I bet you anything that the guy goes home happy with a foul ball, or at least the story that he was on TV in one of the biggest Cubs games ever to be on television.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if Alou doesnt slam his glove to the ground and pitch a fit that Mark Prior isnt rattled, Alex Gonzalez doesnt have his head in the clouds, and the Cubs win the game. Of course thats all speculation, but its definitely something to consider.

Its a shame that Alou will be remembered more for that one moment in time than for what he did for the Cubs. As a pivotal player on a playoff team, Alou could have been remembered with the fondness of a Randall Simon, Kenny Lofton, or Eric Karros. Heck, he might have been given more credit for that playoff run than any other hitter in the lineup. Instead he’s remembered as the left fielder that threw a fit over a ball that he reached for, but admits he wouldnt have caught.

A little advice, Moises: Let it go. Obviously this isnt your strong suit, given how you’ve handled the situation, but its time to live and let live. It happened. Its over. Let it be. Maybe if you’ve have done that in the first place you’d have won a ring in Chicago?
