Some Cubs Fans Are Dumb

April 19th, 2008

Some Cubs fans are dumb.

When Kosuke Fukudome signed with the Cubs he was excited to be the first Japanese player for the Chicago Cubs. From all indications things were going well, as Cubs fans loved Fukudome and it seemed that Fukudome loved the fans. Various signs, headbands and jerseys have popped up in Wrigleyville in honor of Fukudome, and one in particular is garnering attention from many.

The shirt in the link above is offensive. Sure, everyone loves a good joke, but this one is offensive. It seems like a bad idea to offend the first Japanese player in Cubs history, just like it seems like a bad idea to offend one of the better hitters of the young season.

Can you imagine these kind of shirts poking fun at Jackie Robinson? Same basic concept.

With the 61st anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking into baseball passing just a few days ago, it seems like horrible timing for Cubs fans to show their ignorance. Obviously this is just a few people who decided to market a shirt and it should just be a few that are getting punished, but this is a black eye for Cubs Nation.

As an Asian growing up in Chicagoland area and now living in NY, I can tell you that this stuff doesn’t surprise me. My personal observation is that although people like this are in the minority everywhere, stuff like this is more likely to appear openly in the Midwest than NY or the West Coast. It’s not necessarily that there are more of people like this in the Midwest than elsewhere, but they let it show more in the Midwest. It’s possible to see stuff like this in NY or CA, but less likely.

There’s a difference between ignorance and racism, and this to me was more ignorant than racist.

Taking another angle on the fukudome tshirt craze.. I was contacted just this morning by a guy who has a ’shirt business’ where the shirt simply reads “Fukudome YOU!” and has an icon of a baseball glove where the middle finger of the glove is sticking up a tab bit higher than the other fingers… Like it or not, shocking concepts sells…

I agree, but oh well… didnt send me into a fit of rage or anything, but I WAS disapointed to see it…

Shame on the salesman who came up with that idea.

HEY! I’M THAT GUY! LOL Anyways, here’s the deal. It’s just a play on words. We love Kosuke Fukudome over here. We were unbelievably excited & honored to have him come & play for the Cubs. So one night my brother & I were just joking around & he came up with the phrase “Fukudome you!”. It is in reference to the other team, or whoever may get in the Cubs way of winning the World Series. (or whoever ticks you off lol ) It is not a racially motivated slogan in any way. We have many more T-shirt ideas coming & we wish that people would realize that there is nothing more than good (semi) clean fun going on with our shirt.

I would also like to separate us right now from the “Horry Kow” shirt, as that is not us & we are not associated with them nor would we encourage a shirt that poses a negative conotation on basis of race, creed etc.

Come & talk to us down at the game, we’re great guys. We’re just making money the American way! Really it’s all about cheering on the Cubs, we’re all on the same team. Just some of us are in left field & some of are in right. Ok, no more cheezey metaphors, I said my piece. GO CUBS!!

Hey Ryan Pierce, did you go to high school at Zion Benton?

  6. A J Clay says:

fukudomeyou, I did not intend to put yo on the same level as the “Horry Kow” shirt, that shirt is simply rude to a race of people…. Was it intended to be like that? NO of course not.. but it is without a doubt over the line.

The shirt you have with the glove “flipping off” who ever looks at it.. I ask you this, is that something you want your 5 year old sister to see when you take her to the park? Of course not. If your audience was only adults then I would say what’s the big deal? but if you wear that to a game, you are obviously going to cross paths with the youth of America… Perhaps times have changed… I did not mean to attack you personally… and I hope you understand it is nothing against YOU… it is just society as a whole…

  7. Ryan Pierce says:

No, I didnt go to Zion…

As for the shirts, if I saw one via email (Rpierce04@hotmail.com) I might be able to get an idea of what we’re talking about…
