The Crosstown Classic domination continued for the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night as they led for the entire game during their 7-1 win over the Chicago White Sox from Wrigley Field.
This time, it was done on the North Side of town.
The Cubs have now reeled off 6 straight regular-season wins against the rival White Sox & skipper Lou Piniella improved his record to 8-1 against the South Siders after Sunday’s win.
The White Sox started an immediate rally in the top of the 1st inning after Orlando Cabrera hit a lead-off single against Cubs starter Ryan Dempster.
2 batters later, Carlos Quentin singled to put runners at 1st & 2nd with just 1 out for Jermaine Dye.
Dye hit into an inning-ending doubleplay to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs were able to strike first in the bottom of the 1st inning after Kosuke Fukudome drew a lead-off walk from White Sox starter Javier Vazquez.
Eric Patterson then drew a walk, which put runners at 1st & 2nd with nobody out for Derrek Lee.
Lee hit a 2-run single which scored both Fukudome & Patterson (Patterson scored on an error by DeWayne Wise in center field) to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Lee was able to steal 2nd base during Jim Edmonds’ at-bat, but Edmonds fouled out to A.J. Pierzynski for the 2nd out.
Geovany Soto ended the inning with his groundout to Orlando Cabrera at shortstop.
The White Sox had a chance to cut into their deficit in the top of the 2nd inning after Dewayne Wise hit a 2-out single off Dempster.
Wise was able to steal 2nd base during Alexei Ramirez’s at-bat, who grounded out to Mark DeRosa at 2nd to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs had a chance to add onto their lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Ryan Theriot hit a 1-out single.
Ryan Dempster then laid down a successful sac bunt to advance Theriot to 2nd base, but Kosuke Fukudome struck out looking to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs added onto their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning after Kosuke Fukudome was hit by a pitch from Vazquez.
Patterson made Vazquez pay for his mistake, as he hit a 2-run homer (1st of season & major-league career) into the right-field basket to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.
2 batters later, Aramis Ramirez hit a solo homer (14th of season) to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead.
It was Ramirez’s 4th home run in 3 games against the White Sox.
The Sox finally got on the board in the top of the 7th inning after Jermaine Dye hit a lead-off double against dempster.
2 batters later, Joe Crede hit an RBI single to score Dye from 3rd base (Dye advanced to 3rd on Nick Swisher’s infield groundout) to make it a 5-1 Cub lead.
The Cubs got that run right back in the bottom of the 7th inning after Derrek Lee drew a 1-out walk against White Sox reliever Octavio Dotel.
Aramis Ramirez then continued his scorching weekend by hitting an RBI double to score Lee from 1st base, giving the Cubs a 6-1 lead.
Jim Edmonds was then intentionally walked to put runners at 1st & 2nd with just 1 out for Geovany Soto.
Soto just missed a 3-run homer as he flied out to Jermaine Dye in deep right center.
Mark DeRosa then reached 1st base safely on a bobbled ground ball by Joe Crede, which loaded the bases for Ryan Theriot.
Theriot ended the inning with a strikeout.
The White Sox were looking for a late rally after pinch-hitter Jim Thome hit a lead-off double against Dempster.
Dempster then retired Orlando Cabrera (groundout to Theriot), A.J. Pierzynski (pop-out to Ramirez at 3rd base) & Carlos Quentin (strikeout) to work himself out of the jam.
The Cubs pushed across 1 more run in the bottom of the 8th inning after Eric Patterson hit a 2-out single off White Sox closer Bobby Jenks.
Derrek Lee then hit an RBI double to score Patterson from 1st base & gave the Cubs a 7-1 lead. Orlando Cabrera had a chance to run down Lee for the 3rd out, but Cabrera slipped as Lee reached 2nd base safely.
Lee was able to reach 3rd base on a wild pitch during Aramis Ramirez’s at-bat, but struck out to end the inning.
After Jermaine Dye & Nick Swisher hit back-to-back singles off Dempster, Lou Piniella emerged from the Cubs dugout to put an end to another fantastic start from the closer-turned-starter.
Cubs reliever Bob Howry came in & worked out of the jam with no damage done to end the game.
Ryan Dempster (9-2) picks up the win for the Cubs after pitching 8 innings & allowing 1 run on 10 hits.
Javier Vazquez (7-6) takes the loss for the White Sox after pitching 6 innings & allowing 5 runs on 5 hits.
The Cubs will enjoy an off day on Monday & will look to record their 15th consecutive home win on Tuesday when they host the Baltimore Orioles for a 3-game series at Wrigley Field.
Cubs southpaw Sean Marshall (0-0, 4.15) will make his 1st start since August of 2007 on Tuesday & will be opposed by Orioles righthander Jeremy Guthrie (3-7, 3.51).
Marshall is 10-6 in 26 career night starts with a 4.34 ERA. This will be Marshall’s 1st interleague start since June 24th, 2007 against the White Sox.
In that game, Marshall threw 6 1/3 shutout innings & allowed 5 hits during the Cubs’ 3-0 win.
