18 runs on 24 hits.
That’s what the Chicago Cubs’ offense was able to do in 2 games against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, as they dominated the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader by winning 8-0 at Turner Field to complete their first road DH sweep since ‘92.
The Cubs scored half of their 8 runs during the top of the 1st inning, which started after Ryan Theriot & Derrek Lee hit back-to-back 1-out singles off Braves starter Jorge Campillo.
Aramis Ramirez then hit an RBI single to score Theriot from 3rd base & give Chicago a 1-0 lead.
Jim Edmonds was then able to reach on a fielder’s choice after Derrek Lee was able to beat Brian McCann’s tag at home plate to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Mark DeRosa then loaded the bases with just 1 out for Kosuke Fukudome, who hit a 2-run single to score both Ramirez & Edmonds, giving Chicago a 4-0 lead.
Atlanta’s 1st big scoring threat of the game happened during the bottom of the 3rd inning, which started after Jorge Campillo drew a 2-out walk from Chicago starter Rich Harden.
Gregor Blanco & Yuniel Escobar then drew back-to-back walks, which loaded the bases with 2 outs for Casey Kotchman.
Kotchman would ground out to Derrek Lee, who tossed up to a covering Rich Harden at 1st base to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs added another run in the top of the 5th on Alfonso Soriano’s 2-out RBI double which gave Chicago a 5-0 lead.
The Braves threatned again to rally in the bottom of the 5th after Omar Infante drew a 1-out walk from Harden.
2 batters later, Martin Prado singled to put runners at the corners with 2 outs for Jeff Francouer.
Harden then got Francouer to pop up to Derrek Lee at 1st base to end the scoring threat.
Atlanta had yet another chance to get themselves back into the game in the bottom of the 6th inning after pinch-hitter Ruben Gotay drew a lead-off walk from Harden.
Gregor Blanco then laid down a sac bunt, which advanced Gotay to 2nd base with just 1 out for Yuniel Escobar.
Escobar then singled to put runners at 1st & 2nd with just 1 out for Casey Kotchman.
Kotchman grounded out to Derrek Lee at 1st base, but was able to advance both Gotay & Escobar into scoring position with 2 outs for Brian McCann.
Harden then got McCann to strike out, which ended the scoring threat.
Atlanta’s final realistic scoring chance came during the bottom of the 7th inning & started after Jeff Francouer drew a lead-off walk from Chicago reliever Chad Gaudin.
3 batters later, Yuniel Escobar singled off Cubs reliever Neal Cotts to put runners at 1st & 2nd with 2 outs for Casey Kotchman, who grounded out to 1st base to end the scoring threat.
The Cubs then put the game out of reach during a 9th inning rally that saw 8 men reach the plate & started with Reed Johnson’s lead-off single against Braves reliever Mike Gonzalez.
Alfonso Soriano & Ryan Theriot then drew back-to-back walks which loaded the bases with nobody out for Derrek Lee.
Lee took a bases-loaded walk, which forced in Johnson from 3rd base & gave Chicago a 6-0 lead.
Braves reliever Julian Tavarez then entered the game, but not before Aramis Ramirez hit a sac fly that would score Soriano from 3rd base & give the Cubs a 7-0 lead.
Pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot then grounded into a fielder’s choice & scored Theriot from 3rd base to give Chicago a 8-0 lead.
The Cubs have now won 7 consecutive road games & are 15-5 overall since Alfonso Soriano’s return from the disabled list on July 23rd.
Rich Harden (2-1) gets the win for the Cubs & lowered his ERA to 1.80 after pitching 5 shutout innings despite allowing a season-high 5 walks.
Jorge Campillo (7-5) takes the loss for the Braves after allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings of work.
The Chicago Cubs will now look to sweep their 2nd consecutive road series on Thursday evening at 6:10 PM cst from Turner Field, as lefty Ted Lilly (11-6, 4.26) will be opposed by Braves southpaw Tom Glavine (2-3, 4.85).
The Cubs have won each of Lilly’s last 4 starts, while Ted has not suffered a road loss since June 4th at San Diego.
Lilly has yet to lose since the All-Star break, as he is 2-0 in 5 starts with a 2.76 ERA. Lilly did beat Atlanta back on June 10th at Wrigley Field after pitching 6 2/3 innings & allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 8 batters during the Cubs’ 10-5 win.
Tom Glavine will be making his 1st start on Thursday in over 2 months, which was also against the Cubs back on June 10th when he lasted just 3 innings & gave up 4 runs on 6 hits.
Atlanta has lost each of Glavine’s last 4 starts.
